End of the Soo Line passenger main
Title:  End of the Soo Line passenger main
Description:  This is a favorite picture of mine looking southwest on the Soo Line near North St. Paul, MN. This is the end of this beautiful line as the scrappers have begun to move the track behind me about 10 miles. This was the route of Soo Lines St. Paul to Chicago passenger trains until January 1965 and is now part of the Gateway Bike Trail

Unwanted and awaiting their fate
Title:  Unwanted and awaiting their fate
Description:  More GN/CBQ/NP cars sit forlornly in WBL as they wait for their last trip to whichever scrapper cut them to pieces. I still find it sad that the US so completely lost its love affair with the passenger train so quickly. I think we have paid for it dearly.

Unwanted and awaiting their fate
Title:  Unwanted and awaiting their fate
Description:  This is one of the places old passenger cars went to die in the MSP area in the late 70s and early 80s. Many of these cars were in the downtown St. Paul depot until they were moved to this small yard on the M&D line in White Bear Lake. There were dozens of them that I am sure were scrapped not too long after these pictures were taken.

Unwanted and awaiting their fate
Title:  Unwanted and awaiting their fate
Description:  This is the last of 3 I will post here, and I do hope that maybe one or two of these old troopers found some organization to give them a home. We lost thousands of passenger cars to the scrappers in the 1970s as Amtrak cut passenger service in half in one day on May 1st, 1971.

Title:  Rock Island bridge looking west.
Description:  A few months after the bridge was closed, and before all the trees and vegetation took over, the main line is silent over the Mississippi River in St. Paul Park, MN. A pile of sand/dirt has been dumped to keep stray cars from wandering from the refinery onto the bridge.

Awaiting a new owner or the scrapper.
Title:  Awaiting a new owner or the scrapper.
Description:  A long string of boxcars that were displaced on April 1st, await the trustees sale to new owners. We are looking south at Inver Grove Height yard and the old CGW/CNW main that is also on borrowed time south of here about 15 miles, as the CNW will purchase the RI main and abandon this line south of Rosemont in a couple years.

Long lost junction
Title:  Long lost junction
Description:  Looking south at the crossing of the Soo Line passenger main and the BN(ex NP) branchline at Duluth Jct. You can see the milepost from Chicago on the right and the line ended near downtown St. Paul, MN at Trout Brook Junction. The BN branch went from White Bear Lake to Stillwater, MN, a distance of about 12 miles. The scrappers were removing the line behind me a few miles.

Soo Line looking west
Title:  Soo Line looking west
Description:  You are looking west towards Hwy 15 in Washington Cty and the previous shot of the rail removal crane is right behind me. This is the last couple days that this view will exist, and we can imagine Train 5 coming at 49 mph towards Chippewa Falls and Chicago. Within about 6 weeks this 15 mile stretch of track will be gone.

The sad end
Title:  The sad end
Description:  This is something I saw way too much of in Minnesota and Wisconsin in the early to mid 1980s. The rail removal trains working their death march on so many lines. This is on the Soo Line in rural Washington County east of Hwy 15 picking up rail as it progresses west to North St. Paul picking up the old passenger main from Carnelian Lake.

My one and only carnage shot.
Title:  My one and only carnage shot.
Description:  This is the 3rd shot ahead of the rail crane, and it was one of the only shots I ever took of track dismantling. There was something appalling to me about it. When I walked up on this scene, I thought of all the hard work and effort that went into creating our railroads ending up in a heaping mess of scrap. It is hard to imagine the tens of thousands of miles of railroad removed around the country during this decade.

3 on 1 meet at Wyoming Milwaukee Road was working closely with GT and CN at this time, as they were power short and cash short after the huge retrenchment in 1980. Merger with GT looked pretty, certain, but did things sure change the next couple years!

Milwaukee Road Depot
Title:  Milwaukee Road Depot
Description:  This classy little depot was on the Janesville to Mineral Point line of the Mlwaukee Road and at this time I believe the CMN was running the line.

Milwaukee Road northbound in disguise
Title:  Milwaukee Road northbound in disguise
Description:  Hard to believe this is a Milwaukee Road train, but in the early 80s the Milwaukee was power short, and CN/DWP/GT filled in alot of power slots to help keep the trains moving. This is arriving in Sandstone, WI on the former GN route.
